知道嗎，英文名字George，可以幫你記住兩個字根！

George =希臘詞根geo-(表earth) + 詞根org-(表to work)，
geo-這個字根很常見，如geography, apogee(遠地點)等。

至於org-這個字根大家比較不熟(因為有變形)，但是大家對於它衍生的字並不陌生，
例如，work(ork是org的變形), allergy(erg是org的變形), surgery, and orgy(縱欲，狂歡).

所以，合起來，George的意思就是在農地上工作的男人(農夫)

註：
all-erg-y-> all-=allo-=other->身體以外的東西，erg- , work→引起作用，-y名詞字尾后缀->
身體以外的東西所引起的作用→過敏

org-y->work+名詞字尾y->縱欲，狂歡時，人整個身體都動了(work)起來，orgy就是描述這種狀況。

”人體工學” 的英文叫 ergonomics [͵ɝgəˋnɑmɪks]，也是由字根org-而來(erg是org的變形)，

所以 an ergonomic chair 就是 ”符合人體工學的椅子”

如果要講一張椅子不太符合人體工學, 就用否定句:

這個字的副詞是 ergonomically，比如:

英文很厲害？「歪腰郵筒」的英文怎說？(2015-08-15)

現在全台灣（也可能是全世界）最夯的郵筒，莫過於在台北龍江路上的那兩個被蘇迪勒颱風吹落招牌壓垮的歪腰郵筒 了，不過你知道「歪腰郵筒 」的英文怎麼說嗎？

利用交叉搜尋查遍台灣網頁，發現只有少數幾個「歪腰郵筒 」英譯而已，包括crooked waist mailbox、bending mailbox等等，令人驚訝的是，其中多數是誤譯的，你知道為什麼嗎？

「歪腰」只是中文「彎腰」的戲謔說法，原意是指歪斜，所以英譯時如前文把腰也翻譯出來，令人啼笑皆非。

需注意文法問題，將動詞用做形容詞時，有兩種作法，但意義不同：第一種是用現在式（加ing），形容現在正在做的動作；第二種是用過去式，形容已經完成的動作。由於歪腰郵筒 已經被折彎，所以用bend當形容詞時，應該要用過去式「bent」。

「歪腰郵筒 」除了譯為bent mailbox，查外媒也用crooked mailbox、tilted mailbox等等。

背GRE單字

記得那年我推甄上了外文系
打電話到系辦公室問
我可以趁開學之前 如何充實自己
讓既有的高中程度與大學外文系的程度接軌
可惜那時候所得到的答案很籠統
因為我問錯人了(I barked up the wrong tree.)
我應該直接找系上的老師問
(同學們~跟老師打好關係真的很重要啊!)

十幾年過去了 我的經驗告訴我
當時我要的答案其實很簡單
就是把GRE單字背起來
所謂GRE單字就是任何要進入美國研究所就讀的學生
必考的一個英語文測驗 它的特色呢~就是有很多"很難"又長得很像的單字

但是背這些單字絕對不過分 因為他們會出現在日常生活的報章雜誌書本裡頭
所以 熟記GRE單字絕對是以下對象的基本功
(1)想唸外文系
(2)已經在唸外文系
(3)有志於當外交官
(4)要去英美國家就學
(5)要考國內國立高中職英文科教甄
沒有背GRE單字 你就跟英美文學作品無緣
因為基本上吸收不了 會花太多時間查單字
然後罵學校不人性 都給我們看這些天書做什麼
然後就虛應故事 沒有真正把文學作品讀過
想留學也申請不上一流學校
因為你的GRE成績就根本搆不到門檻
想考教甄也是空想 因為第一關筆試就過不了

GRE單字既然如此重要
為何熟背者不多呢 ?
最大的原因 就是我們不了解它到底有多重要
為什麼不了解? 因為老師沒跟我們說它很重要
為什麼老師沒跟我們說? 因為我們沒去問
又或者老師們也沒背起來 因為背GRE單字是件苦差事
如果沒有在學生時代背起來 工作了之後再背 是難上加難
因為記憶力不如從前 而且雜務多 無法專心 會打退堂鼓

GRE單字妙處就在這於 你背了 才知道它的好處
它就是唸完國內高中的英文和native speaker之間的落差
所以我認為如果要提升國內學生英文能力
國小就要背完2000單字
國中就要背完高中單字
高中要背完GRE單字

背完了之後
就算是打通了英文的任督二脈
從此可以暢遊英語文的世界無阻
當然 還是會遇到新字的
畢竟英文是世界上 單字量最多的語言 高達兩百萬字
一天背50個 背個100年也背不完
但有了GRE單字的輔助 將可以大大降低查字典的頻率

那...到底GRE單字要怎麼背呢?
相信這個資訊不難找到
我的方法 是用了三個月的時間
除了吃飯睡覺休息以外 就是在背單字
用三個月把紅寶書背過一次
之後就展開複習行動
把每次都卡住的單字特別標記起來
自製閃式卡 每天早上起來都閃幾下

於此同時 也開始讀原汁原味的小說
找幾本自己有興趣的 這時候你就會發現自己功力大增
也會體會到辛苦是有代價的
因為你幾乎不用停下來查單字

記住 除非你有特別訓練過自己的記憶力
否則 背了是會忘的
因此一定要定期複習
單字才會跟著你長長久久~

諧音記憶
ponderous
諧音：胖的要死->笨重的；沉悶的；呆板的
這個諧音聯想，能音、義結合，讓人一下子就記住字義。

Origin：
Late Middle English: via French from Latin ponderosus, from pondus, ponder- 'weight'.

說明：
1. ponderous = ponder-(weight) + -ous(多)=weight，重量+ 很多的->很多的重量->笨重的

2. pond-er，源自於pend-(字根pend-, pond-是hang, 或 weigh的意思)。

做名詞時(中世紀)，是weight(重量)的意思(er做名詞字尾，如writer)；

做動詞時(現代)，是weigh(稱重)的意思(er做動詞字尾，表連續動作)。
但是這個稱重是"在心中秤秤看"，也就是「權衡得失輕重」，
例如，片語ponder over=考慮; 深思
He was pondering deeply over the matter . 他在反覆考慮那件事。。

3. ponderous笨重的，也用於形容文章或講話風格冗長：

(A) monologues, (C) asides, and (E) soliloquies are all vaguely related, but the key difference is that a monologue may be addressed to other characters, which allows you to reject (A). An aside is a brief statement rather than a speech, which eliminates (C). (E) soliloquies refers to speeches that are made by a character directly to the audience without the awareness or interaction of other characters, and is the appropriate choice for this sentence.

soliloquy：角色在台上，以自己對對自己說話的方式(自言自語)說出台詞、讓觀眾了解這角色心中的想法，但台上的其他角色聽不到他的說話（若台上真有其他角色的話）。

monologue：「獨角戲」，是指一個角色在台上發表一篇（通常很長）的台詞，而台上其他角色聽得到卻不插嘴（若台上也有其他角色的話）。

在莎翁的戲裏有許多角色是在「自言自語」( Soliloquy) ，例如題目中提到的
1、Juliet's "Wherefore art thou Romeo?"

thou=>you之古字
art=>are之古字
wherefore=>why之古字
Romeo-wherefore art thou?=>Romeo-Why are you?
茱麗葉說：O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
是Romeo&Juliet這齣劇裡的名言，意思是噢，羅密歐，羅密歐！為什麼你是羅密歐呢？
也就是why are you Romeo？
