From my experience, I think it is better to be honest than faking when you really don't know something. They might just want to know your depth and how you think rather than expecting a perfect answer.

Never say "I don't know how to say it in English." Well, if you can't express your thoughts during the interview, how can I, as an interviewer or admission officer, expect you to know how to express your thoguhts in English when you are in school?

For the second one, I think that, given the typical MBA interview settings, one will never encounter any question he/she doens't know what's the answer.

On the high-level questions such as why MBA, why XXX school, no one will get admitted if he/she doesn't know how to answer it.

On the more detailed, follow-up questions such as asking you what's your view of Asia market if you talked to your interviewer that you like investing or following capital market, you also should know the answers.

So, the only situation in which you have to "pretend" you know something is when you say something to your interviewer that you actually have no idea about it and he/she asks follow-up questions.

Hence, never use those two answers in "MBA interview".

"Be prepared" is the most important thing after stepping into the MBA world. You should always have an answer for the questions you are asked.

Indeed sometimes the interviewers just want to hear your thoughts. But most of the time, if you don't have an answer or have answers like what Mark mentioned about, basically you are out already.

Slightly off-topic...

I guess there is a debate of whether integrity can be taught in business school. My personal belief is that if you are a liar and a cheater before business school, then you will be a liar and a cheater after business school. Business schools give you the knowledge and the skills to do something great, but whether to do something greatly important or something greatly disgusting is your own choosing.

That being said, I think with most MBA interviews, preparation is key. Think about what questions might be asked. All the basic questions like why this school and your career plan need to prepared thoroughly. Also, go over your resume and think about any potential questions that might be asked from there. Finally, there will always be questions that you are unprepared for. Ask the interviewer for a couple seconds to gather thought, then just say whatever you can think of. Sometimes interviewers look for composure under pressure.

Interesting point about what MBA is from Jason and decent comment from cburger. However, I think there is a fundamental difference to be "prepared to lie" or "prepared to share your thoughts on things."

MBA training will definitely let you know better how to present yourself, but that is far from telling lies to others. Integrity is truly key for one to be sustainable in the business world. Those who just focus on short term benefits will find it hard to keep a good reputation in the long run.

This seems to me a distortion toward MBA or others' comments.

What others said is about how to Manage rather than Manipulate the interviews. It is true that the boundary between management and manipulation is unclear. MBA teaches us both, not for us to use both but to know the difference and make our own decision, which means individual is the one held accountable, not the whole system.

Being sarcastic doesn't help; people appreciate straightforward advices.
