Low GMAT/IBT, but still want an MBA - PLS consider UST

文章Kawaiipin » 2008-02-15 10:25

There are so many smart people on this chat board; most of us are applying to the top 20 B-schools. But not everyone is good at GMAT/IBT academic tests. If you have low GMAT/IBT scores, does this mean you should just quit and stay where you are now? Of course not! Here is one option for you. If you have clear goals for the future.

OK, let me cut to my main topic. Why you should consider my school – University of St. Thomas: Opus College of Business (UST)?
1. Location: Minneapolis Minnesota. Los of top 100 US companies set up their headquarters here.
2. Resources: University of St.Thomas has lots of alumni from the part time/executive/full time MBA programs. When you add the numbers, they are bigger than Carlson’s. This offers priceless networking power.
3. Tuition: Compared with other schools, the tuition is cheaper. International students pay the same fee as American, US$750 per credit. You need 61 credits to graduate.
4. Attention: Full-Time MBA is a new program, which was established in 2003.
The first graduation was Class of 2005. Current class size is 60 people.
You know each of your classmates and each professor knows you.
Compared with other top B-Schools where the class size is 120 to 240 people, you
get more attention.
5. Scholarship: Since this is a new program, UST is willing to give scholarships to attract good students. Even if your GMAT scores are average scores (550), if you have years of working experience, you will still have good chance to get a scholarship. If you have outstanding GMAT scores (700 and above), you will have a great opportunity to get full scholarship.
6. Convenient:
The campus is located in downtown Minneapolis; which is extremely convenient to most places even you if don’t have a car.

• UST Campus is near a YMCA, only 3 minutes walking distance though the skyway. Students pay 25% of the regular fee, US$15/month.
• Campus is near central Minneapolis Public Library, 15 to 20 minutes walking. If you love the library, you will love it here.
• Campus is near Target, only 5 minutes walking distance though skyway, you can do your regular shopping there.
• Campus is near churches. There is one just right next to school, 1 minute walking distance.
7. Save & Friendly Environment:
Minnesota is one of the friendliest states in the USA. Everyone knows “Minnesota Nice”. Most of the people here are willing to talk to you.

Conclusion:
If you have years of working experience, your dream is to get a MBA degree. You know this degree may not let you earn more money in the future if you return to your own country. But if you want to get solid business knowledge. I suggest you to apply to Full-Time MBA program at University of St.Thomas.
If you want to know about my experience here, just shoot me an email.

I don’t know your definition of “a lot” means, but so far, I only counted one, Target Corp, fortune 100 companies based in Minneapolis. Nevertheless, there are 8 fortune 500 companies based in Minneapolis and around 30 fortune 1000 companies based in the Twin Cities area. Well known companies such as Best Buy, 3M, Norwest Airline, Land O’Lakes, Imation or privately owned companies such as TGI Friday’s – a Sub of Carlson Company, Buffalo Wild Wings are all based in the metro area of Twin Cities.

As far as alumni go, I would definitely like to see the statistic. Although Carlson School of Management only takes roughly 200 full time MBA students, it has more than 2,000 part time MBA students. I might be wrong, but I somehow found hard to believe St. Thomas would have a bigger alumni groups.

Thanks for Jason Lee's correction. I should say there are lots of big companies in the metro area of Twin Cities. In fact, I just finished my internship interviews with SUPERVALU (a Fortune 50 company) and Cummins Power Generation last week. Next week US bank and Hershey's will come to the campus for interview. As for the alumni numbers, I will check with our admission office for formal numbers.

As for Macc( MS-Accounting ) program, yes , there is 保證的工作機會. But, not for Full-Time MBA program.

Regarding alumni , University of St.Thomas does has more alumni than Carlson.
Full Time MBA program is pretty young established at 2003.
Part time MBA program program is over 30 years.
Executive MBA program is over 15 years.
Total alumni is around 15,000 people.
Anyway, if you like Minnesota, if you have GMAT average 650, apply Carlson. If you don't have outstanding GMAT, then consider University of St.Thomas.
As for the rest of MBA program at other schools, I won't recommend them.

I know you are working hard to promote your school, and I totally respect that. I just found it is hard to believe that St Thomas has more alumni than Carlson does. Pardon me if I couldn’t just take your words for it. I also did a little research of my own. Although I couldn’t find the alumni number for MBA degree holders only, it is established there are 50,000 Carlson alumni out there alive.

Full-time MBA: established in 1936 and has 217 students (67 years older than St Thomas)

Part-time MBA: established in 1960 and has 2,016 students (10-20 years older)

Undergraduate: established in 1919 and has 1,868 students

Executive MBA: established in 1970 and has 554 students worldwide (20-30 years older)

PhD program: established in 1948 and has 98 students

Macc: established in 2006 and has 30 students

MBT: established in 1978 and has 110 full time students

MA HRIR: has 224 students

Based on those numbers, it is really hard to convince me that St. Thomas has more living alumni than Carlson does. Again, I’m not making any judgments about St. Thomas, and maybe my research skill is not that mature. If you could backup your own statement, everything you said about St. Thomas would be more creditable.

Dear Jason. So far as I know St.Thomas is quite proud of the Alumni numbers. I will ask our admission office to submit precious numbers for it, and share with everyone. BTW, I think you will do very good on the ABR class ( Applied Business Research), you did good at the secondary research.
