How to Write the Statement of Purpose
Do you want to be accepted by the best university you can get into? If so, know that although academic achievements and good test scores are important, a university wants to know more about you. To apply, you fill out application forms, send grade reports, and send letters of recommendation. All of these documents are information you cannot control. They are the opinions of others. You really only have one chance to say what YOU want to say about yourself—The Statement of Purpose.
A Statement of Purpose is an essay you write to tell a school why you think you will succeed at their school and your career and why the school should accept you. The school wants to see (1) a clear, short, well-organized essay that objectively shows your ability and motivation to succeed. (2) They want you to show them in a direct, straightforward way with convincing examples that you have the education and experience you need to succeed. (3) They want to see if you can write a grammatically correct and stylistically appealing essay that gets to the main point quickly, keeps to that point, and persuades them to accept you. Two pages or less!
In a Statement of Purpose, you will tell them why you are studying this field, what your specialization is, and how you will use your degree in the future. You will (1) show them that you are prepared academically and that are suitable for this program, (2) tell them what resources you think they have to help you reach your goals, and (3) convince them that you have the personal characteristics and skills needed have a fruitful course of study and stellar career.
Good schools want students capable of unconfused, clear thinking. By seeing how the Statement of Purpose is written, they can see if the student is clear-headed or astute. If they read a poorly organized, overly wordy, or vague essay, they reject the student because they believe s/he does not have enough discipline to consider facts objectively or present them logically.
