UC Irvine Interview

帖子lisayang83 » 2008-01-18 14:35

Hello

Who will be your interviewer?
I had my UCI interview in November over telephone. The interview of UCI is pretty straightforward. My interviewer was Christine Hoyt. She is a pretty patient woman and always gives you positive feedbacks.

The questions do not vary from year to year, and you can dig through the historical postings to find out the questions.

The challenge of being interviewed through phone is that you cannot observe the interviewer's physical body language and facial expressions. These can actually tell you rather they are enjoying the interview or they are bored with your answers.

The advantage of telephone interview is that you can prepare your answers ahead, especially with UCI, you can pretty much expect the questions about "why MBA, why Irvine and why now?" and familiarize with your own application essays.

The duration of the interview varies form person to person. Mine was about 40 minutes because Christine wanted a explaination of my poor university GPA...

Anyways, if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line here. I will do my best to answer your questions.

thanks for your reply.

I have a very stupid question, for phone interviews, do we call them? or will they call us?!
and do you know how long it takes for the results to come out since the interview?

I know they have a fixed schedule for the result dates, but since they do rolling applications i guess the dates are just for reference?

thanks again!

The school will call you with the given phone number in your application.

The result should be out in a month (AT least that what school told me. Yet, I personally waited for 2.5 months.

If you are not a fluent english speaker or if you prefer standard questions, I would recommend you to interview with Christine Hoyt instead of Sarah Ramsey. Sarah is very young, talks fast, and her questions are tough. I interviewed 12/5 on campus and we talked for more than 1.5 hrs. She had my resume with me and seemed to have a very good understanding of my background. I think she read my essays in depth and prepared specific questions regarding my career goal (I want to start a restaurant business), and she extended the questions more depending on how my answers were. She was very straightforward, so I would suggest people to have specific scenarios /examples in mind so that you wouldn't run out of stories when she asked you to give her proofs.

My questions are :
1. Why UCI?
2. What do you think UCI can offer for you to succeed in restaurant business?
3. Why do you switch your career? Any motivation?
4. What kinds of efforts have you made in order to allow yourself to enter the new industry? What kind of job/position do you project yourself to be doing for your internship? (I was very surprised when she asked me this question because she dug into my previous questions more and more)
5. What do you think you can bring to the UCI community?
6. Tell me one example when you use leadership skill to solve a problem in a teamwork setting? What do you think is the most difficult issue and what actions did you take?
7. What would you have changed if you are able to do it again? What have you learned from that experience?
8. We talked about your career goal. What about your current job? What have you learn in this industry and why do you think you outperform your colleagues in the company?
9. Are you interested in any UCI's student organizations, competitions or clubs?
10. Any questions for me? (At this point I was so exhausted that my brain was not working anymore..)

Hope this helps. Practice makes perfect!

Hello, I just had an interview with Christine Hoyt today..
And after almost each question, she says "greaat..., excellent..., ", which left me a bit vexed.
I'm wondering if this is her personal style?
Cuz, personally, i only make comments as such when i don't know what to say.
I hope she didn't find my answers too unexpected..

Below were my questions for those that are interested in doing an interview with the school
1. Walk me through your resume
2. Why do you want to do IB (cuz i've mentioned that in my essay)
3. What steps have you taken to learn about the industry
4. Why did you do market research upon graduation?
5. what is your leadership style?
6. At work, were there times when the things that you do do not interest you, what did you do then?

Those were about it~!
