Thanks for showing your interest in Ross, and followings are the information you are seeking.

1.Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP)是不是每個學生都有機會參與?他主要的case是哪方面/領域?參與的case是由學生自己挑選組隊apply嗎?

MAP is a REQUIRED course. In other words, every student can and must participate in it.

Each MAP team has 4~6 students. Since each year Ross recruit about 400 students, 80 teams will be formed. Come to think of it, 80 is quite a big number, and that is why MSP includes every business field, and each filed has plenty projects to choose from. Therefore, you definitely will get to the field to you like, may it be Finance, Marketing, Operation, Strategy, HR, Start-up, or non-profit.

As for the creation of teams, unfortunately (and fortunately) it is a black box procedure. A student can apply for whatever projects he/she is interested in by ranking the 100ish projects available. After every student submits the ranking. The school decides who gets what. Typically, a student will get in one of his/her top 5 choices, but no way he can predict who the teammates will be. Once the team is formed and announced, changing a project or exchanging team members are nearly impossible. We believe it is a good procedure for the following three reasons:

1. MAP is highly regarded by its participating companies and considered the best program of its kind in U.S. because we take it very very seriously (7.5 credit points). The school is more experienced than students in terms of forming a well-balanced team that is more likely to succeed while everyone can learn something through out the process. For example, if a project requires a 1-week trip to China, the team better has someone who speaks native Mandarin, right?

2. By the same token, if allowing the students forming a team first and then apply for the projects, we may end up with, for example, a team of 5 finance guys who get to do a finance project. Although it does not seem too bad, it actually is. -- Without diversity, the team will be very narrow-minded and limit the quality of output. Moreover, these finance students would not learn how to communicate with non-finance people. Last, non-finance students would not get a finance project even if they want to.

3. In real life, especially in the first post-MBA job, one doesn't get to pick the people his/she likes to work with, and we in Ross like to learn real life in the hard way. Get a lazy team mate? Too bad, so sad. But suck it up and double your effort! We have billion-dollar corporations (and poor start-ups) waiting for our output to make real decisions. And we WILL deliver.

2.ROSS很強調action-based learning,主要是指MAP嗎?還是指什麼?
MAP is a great example to show how much Ross likes the action-based learning approach. Of course, this approach applies broadly in the student life. Another famous example is the Wolverine Venture Fund, where a student board decides how to use real money to invest in real venture companies, and some portfolio companies has gone IPO already. However, I would discourage one to tie action-based learning with a specific course. It is more a concept that infests in every professor's mind when they design the class experience. As a result, we have a lot "games" and "activities" in everyday classes, such as bidding wars in Economics, stock pitching in Finance, brand competition simulation in Marketing, to name a few.

One thing you must know about Ross -- We brag about action-based learning because we like down-to-the-earth people. Thinking and talking are certainly important, but I think Ross wants its alumni to be THE ONE to carry out the task, not just the one who conceive the task. Of course, this go-into-the-battleground attitude may not be very appealing to some people :PP

3.請問ROSS在Corporate Finance方面的評語如何?

Not sure what to say here. Ross is considered a very well-rounded school, partly thanks to the fact that the University of Michigan is the biggest university among the counterparts of other top 10 b-schools. Recruiters come to Ross for all kinds of positions, and Corporate Finance is definitely one of the mainstreams. Personally, I was focusing on Finance and Strategy courses while I am more interested in entrepreneurship in the future, and I am very happy about the quality of the Finance classes I took, in which I learned so much that I could build a financial model that beats one from a IBanker classmate, in a corporate finance policy pitching.

Thanks for your reply and the information you deliver. I'm really interested in MAP! Coincidentally, my interest fields are finance and strategy, too. In additon, I have some follow-up questions. Would you mind giving me your e-mail for further questions and my quoting your name in the essays?
