The answer is D, but I choose C.
The reason why I think C is better than D is because xxx are not A, but B...while the "are" before B shold be able to be omitted.
If so, the seems like C is better than D??

is there someone who can answer the question for me?

我發現C 省略助動詞會有ambi..

favored... 修飾 selection (i.e. selection is favored) 逗點中間的插句是修飾語,不是平衡的一部份.
(D) ... traits are... , but are... 平衡, are 不能省略,表示不跟 favored 平衡.

這題我看了半小時 還是不覺得不加are會有ambiguity
難到不補上are會讓人誤以為是

可是中間已經隔了一個comma了 還是會讓人誤會嗎

當介詞不是應該是Because they enhance A but B 中間沒comma嗎
Because they enhance A, but B ??有這種用法嗎

我在longman上查到的例句 中間都是沒comma的
I could come any day but Thursday.
There's no one here but me.
I could still see nothing but the spirals of desert dust.
He was unable to swallow anything but liquids.

感覺多了comma就已經回到主句了 到底該怎麼看?

以下是我的篩選方式，歡迎多加討論：
(A) Paleontologist argued that "many biological traits" are not the products of natural selection(, favored...), but are，慣用語A is not B, but is C，that they多餘→刪除
(B) 同(A)，they多餘→刪除
(C) 同(A)，but後面少are，另外雖然A is not B, but C也是慣用語，但是我覺得GMAT在這種複雜的句型結構上應該會follow嚴謹一點的寫法，所以我覺得are不可少→刪除
(E) 違背題旨，because of (their) enhancing reproduction or survival→刪除
