Dartmouth College, Tuck

Personal Background
- GMAT: 760/4
- TOEFL: 277/4.5
- Education: NTU BS/MS in Chemical Engineering, GPA: 3.3/4
- Work experience: 7 years within a U.S. semiconductor company, PM in last 2 years

Interview and School Visit Experience

I submitted most of my applications in 1st round so I arranged my campus-visit trip in early November. I visited 7 schools in 2 weeks, and arrived at Tuck on 11/13. In the first place, Tuck requested all early-round applicants to finish their interviews by 10/13. I told them I can’t make it before Nov, but I really liked to have an on-campus interview so they granted me a favor to finish it by 11/17.

I joined a strategy class in the morning and had my interview after lunch. My interviewer was a 2nd-year student. She conducted her session almost based on my resume, but the typical information, like 'why MBA', 'why Tuck', 'careers goal', and 'team experience', was all included in our conversation. The only surprise happened when she’s close to finish her session, she asked me “suppose the interview is finished, and I met an admission office right out of this room, how’d you like me to describe you?” I’m sorry I couldn’t quite remember how I responded this question

Why Tuck
Alumni network:
1. Tuck’s alumni network is not big, but probably the strongest. Tuck’s alumni donation rate is more than 60% while most other top B-schools are below 20%.
2. I heard a lot of stories about how alumni help current students find jobs, but this one is the most impressive because this one is from Tuck CDO (Career Development Office). In the ASW (admitted students’ weekend), CDO shared the story about how difficult it was to place students in job-scarce 2001. CDO sought out help from alumni and requested them to hire at least one student. Per CDO, they were overwhelmed by the response to their appeal, and every student was taken care of even in year 2001. Really impressive!.

Academic Strength:

I’d like to do consulting after MBA. Tuck’s strength in general management fits my need and my background.

Brand name:
Tuck seems no visibility in Taiwan (and low visibility in Asia), but, for me, that only applies to people who don’t know much about MBA or people who don’t pay me the MBA money. All traditional MBA recruiters, like IM and MC, know and like Tuck students, and that’s enough.

Small Size:
I heard a good story about small-size class. One 1st-year student told me he had his internship interview with 2 fellow tuck students in New York. On that day, there were also Harvard, Wharton and Columbia students there. Each school had its own circle, and he noticed that while other groups just started making self-introduction, Tuckies had already stared making fun of each other because Tuckis had known each other quite well in school.

What’s more

I wanna share you some 1st hand information about Tuck here. I joined ASW in April, and the admissions office said that the Tuck's application volume (07: up 13%, 06: up 30%) and GMAT average (715) go up again this year. These numbers don't include the final round so the final figures may change.
