corporate strategy

文章Wutang » 2007-09-25 16:32

After I spent a few months on the forum, I feel I have gained much insightful knowledge from all of you.

I really appreciate everything you all have done, and I will definitely try to help out within my limitation.

Here is a question for all of you, what types of entry level position or preparation should I get into if I want to do stuff related to corporate strategy later on? I understand for someone on the strategic positon u have to be experienced. However, I just thought that it would be helpful to ask people so I can find a way to get started.

thank you very much

best regards
James

Do you want to do Corporate Strategy in those big firms such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, Investment banks, etc.?

If yes, I guess working as a consultant will be a good entry level position. As I see from my classmates who work in Google, MS, or Lehman Brothers for Corporate Strategy function this summer, I find they all have consulting experience before coming to b-school. Some were in big consulting firms some were not.

I think GPA is the most important thing for undergraduate to apply those big consulting firms. The second important thing is educational background. You don't need to have any fancy major but the "name" of your school definitely matters. Ex. Stanford with major in history can get into McKinsey. They value high GPA and school name. They need "smart" people from different kinds of backgrounds. So, when doing case interview, they don't care how much you really know about the specific industry they are testing you. What they want is to see how smart you are to analyze the case fast and get the key points on spot. Actually, there is no "consulting" or related major, right?

In addition to these big firms, I think there are still lots of small consulting firms. You may try to find some information from your friends or maybe university career resources.

Finally, I am not sure what "case studeis" you mean. If they are HBS cases, I would say forget them. They are not helping you for case interviews. You should buy books like "Case in Point" rather than HBS cases. They are totally different.

P.S.
