Personal Summary and SOP不同處

最近在申請學校對這兩個文件弄得不是很懂，學校網頁這樣寫

Your Statement of Purpose should describe your legal interests and professional plans following completion of your study.

Your Personal Summary should provide a brief account of your personal history, with emphasis on the development of your interest.Please note that you should not submit a c.v. in lieu of your Personal Summary, which is a written statement. You may however submit a c.v. as supplementary material if you wish.

我想SOP應該就是表達你想在這間學校學習什麼專業領域，也就是傳統的讀書計畫

但是personal summary說不是CV又說如果你希望的話可以以CV代替，那不是CV是什麼?是要一篇文章還是一樣條列式啊?不知哪裡可以找到範例

把personal summary 想像成在寫自傳，

用narrative的方式把學校要的資訊寫上去，

但不要記流水帳，學校大致只關心你的education跟experience部分，

從你摘錄下來的說明看的出來學校是希望你多著墨一點你有興趣的領域，

以及你為何會對該領域發生興趣的緣由

其他像你家有幾個人你休閒是什麼，都是贅文。

所以跟傳統定義的自傳還是不一樣，

因此很難把這個personal summary適當地翻譯成中文。

補充一點，

文中沒有說可以用CV代替，他是說你要的話可以附上CV當補充資料

真是不好意思...眼殘...看成是可以代替....

最近申請學校弄得自己很無力,
我已經職業三年多,
因為某些因素家人希望我在美國拿一個學位然後留在美國(沒有身分和金錢方面的顧慮)
可是我的英文很破,托福考的不是很理想,
自己對於唸LLM心中其實也是有疑慮,
因為就算僥倖被錄取了唸完出來也不知是否可以在美國找到工作,
還是乾脆換領域好了?
可是目前已經箭在弦上,
LLM也是最快拿到學位的管道,
只好硬著頭皮向前了~
不知道這樣的投資到底值不值得?
希望有人可以指點迷津~

關於LLM留美工作這件事，目前並沒有一個精確統計，因此只能以個人經驗跟同儕之間口耳相傳的訊息供你參考。有興趣的話可以參考台北市政府法規會葉主委慶元的網誌「葉狀師闖天關」，畢竟他拿到賓大JD以後有到紐約國際事務所工作一年的經驗。他的說法可能更具有說服力一點。

很遺憾的，
由於台灣近年經濟不振，加上中國大陸的磁吸效應，
台灣學生對美國事務所的吸引力很低。
相較於中國大陸LLM畢業生的熱門，
近年來台灣LLM成功在美國找到工作的例子，
泰半限於TOP5的LLM畢業生（我聽過的例子多是Harvard畢業的LLM），

我不知道樓主目前申請的List有哪些，
但是若非TOP 5的學校，想要留在美國工作，
可能需要一些特異功能或關係。

以我目前念的西北大學來說，
本校的career center在中西部可是出名的厲害，
3L JD在第三年剛開始沒多久，每個人手上通常都已經握有複數的offer，
而且當然都是US＄160,000的標準起薪。

但是去年在紐約舉辦的International Student Interview Program (ISIP),
本校約二十個台灣LLM裡面獲得「面試機會」的，僅僅一人而已。
由敝校這個小小例子就可以稍微窺見目前台灣LLM在美國求職的艱困程度。

不過對於西岸的工作機會我比較不清楚，
可能有待西岸的同學上來分享分享。

樓主有提到身份跟金錢沒問題，
身份的話，由於可以免除辦H-1的花費跟麻煩，
因此或許可以稍稍增加一點雇主的興趣，
但癥結點仍在市場供需，
當200～300個LLM同時在搶5個（甚至更少）國際型事務所的offer，
那成功機率可想而知。

最後，如果打死也要留在美國工作，
那中國城的移民律師事務所大概是最方便的選擇，
不過US＄30000~50000的收入，扣稅以後可以說比留在台灣還差，
對於履歷上的經歷又沒有幫助，因此可說是下下之選。

結論：LLM雖然時間快，但如果沒有念到TOP 5的學校，要想畢業留在美國工作，可能需要三思三思再三思。抱著留下來工作的目標來念LLM，你可能會非常非常失望......

How about the job market for Taiwanese JD, say from Northwestern University school of law?

There is no Taiwanese JD graduated from Northwestern these three years (NU doesn't have the policy allowing LLM to transfer to JD class). Currently we have 2 SJD and 1 JD/MBA condidates from Taiwan. That JD/MBA has been living in US for a long time. BTW, I've heard there is a Taiwanese admitted in JD class next fall.

BTW, this guy who get admitted to NU JD class next fall must apply very early, probably have his file complete
in early Oct.

I know this JD/MBA Taiwanese lady. For those who are curious, she received a PhD (biochemistry) from a top Pac-10 institution and worked as a researcher at a famous pharmaceutical company for a number of years.
