給留學生的7項建議 留學到底學什麼？

近幾年，台灣出國留學的比例逐漸下滑，很多優秀的年輕人不願意出國，而選擇國內的研究所。其實以成本的角度來說，國外的學校學費雖然高，但還是比較划算。以台大為例，每個台大學生平均每年可享的教育經費為20 萬新台幣，而一位哈佛學生平均是6 萬美元，相當於180 萬新台幣，而牛津大學則享有近10 萬美元，相當於300萬台幣。

此外，還有全球頂尖的師資與資源，如果有機會申請而不去念，實在可惜。

我曾經分享，如果沒有經歷留學生涯，也無法成就今天的我。很多人認為出國留學只是念書，拿個學位，甚至鍍個金。但如果只是抱著這種心態，那麼即便出國深造，也可能只學到兩三成的精華。因此，我想以過來人的身分，分享幾點出國留學的建議：

1 出國留學不只是讀書
我認為留學不是特效藥，而是一種補品，不是只有「鍍金」而已，而是打開你的視野，用不同的角度看事情。以我的例子來說，我認為在留學階段中，受用最多的倒不是專業知識與技巧，而是經過學習思考後沉澱下來的知識，多年後，對我的思維方式，如何看待事情，以及解決問題，有很大的影響與幫助。

在哥倫比亞大學期間， 影響我最深的兩門課就是：Contemporary Civilization（當代文明） 以及Literature and Humanities（文學與人文）。每週，我們必須讀一本世界名著，而且必須經過討論，並撰寫成文章。當時沒有太多感覺，但後來發現，我的思維方式慢慢被改變了，倒不是我特別記得哪位名人的話，而是當他們的思想，以及大量的知識從腦子走過一遍，腦子就變得不一樣，這就是教育的價值。

2 學習不同觀點，運用批判性思考
每個國家的文化都潛移默化灌輸觀點甚至偏見給年輕人，當你到了不同的國家，才能深刻體會。例如到了美國，了解美國人的思維方式，為什麼美國以世界警察自居，為什麼攻打伊拉克？

如果不出國，你很難有機會思考不同的觀點。而當你體會不同的觀點甚至偏見，進而反思自己的價值觀，運用批判性的思考（Critical inking），才能學習用超脫的價值觀來看待事情。

3 把握機會主動提問
在台灣，老師似乎代表權威，西方的思維則是，在追求智慧的道路上，人人都是平等的，老師的地位也是如此，很多事情可以互相討論，挑戰老師不代表不尊敬，凡事就事論事。

老師是非常重要的資源，但他們不會主動問是否需要開導。你必須保有赤子之心，像小孩一樣提問，甚至厚臉皮，打破砂鍋問到底，才能學到、得到更多。

除了專業知識，許多關於文化的深度問題，也可以提出討論。例如兩個月前，我在英國參訪，我就很好奇英國不到世界1%的人口，卻能夠出現像牛頓、圖靈等偉大的科學家; 而過去幾千年的歷史中，很多帝國都是瞬間瓦解，為什麼大英帝國卻是慢慢衰落。如果不在當地，或許你無法深刻了解並提出深度的問題，如果沒有好好把握這些學習的機會，非常可惜。

4 多嘗試，求學時失敗代價最低
正如賈伯斯曾經分享，他在年輕時做了很多嘗試，許多當時看似失敗的事，在大學時，根本無法將這些事串聯起來，但是10年後，回頭看，一切是多麼的清晰。

在大學期間，我還不知道自己的興趣，因此選擇數學和法律雙修。後來，我知道自己不是數學天才，也對法律沒興趣，最後才找到我的興趣──電腦。

我知道很多台灣的留學生都是研究生，已經知道自己的專業，但是出國後，除了課業外，也可以嘗試選修不同的課，或是參與課外活動，甚至創業。當你年輕時，同時是失敗成本最低、也是最高潛力的時機，更應該好好發揮自己，多做嘗試。

5學好英文，試著打入同學圈子
我常開玩笑，當你做夢時講英文，用英文思考時，你的英文就真的進步了。多讀英文原著可以增進英語能力。另外，廣結善緣，多用英語溝通與交流也是不錯的管道。不管畢業後是否想要留下來，花心思打進同學的交友圈，能讓你受用無窮，同時拓展生活領域。

6 多體驗留學環境
每個文化都有值得學習的地方，如果到了英國沒去參觀大英博物館，到了美國沒能了解美國當代藝術，就太可惜了。如果有時間，也可以規畫短期旅遊，藉由旅行，更能了解當地的環境與文化。

7 管理時間，避免有不良習慣
最後很重要的，多善用時間管理，不要浪費人生中最後專注學習的時間。留學的生涯或許只有短短幾年，但生命的格局將可能因此而不同。要珍惜每一刻學習的機會，努力融入美國社會，吸取他們最精華的價值，才是留學真正的意義。

先說三個。

facetious 滑稽的 ：not seriously meaning what you say, usually in an attempt to be humorous or to trick someone:
facet(小臉)+i+ous(多)->(像小丑一樣一下子變了)很多的小臉->滑稽的
ex. I make so much money that we never have to worry – I’m being facetious.

factious 派系的
出自faction，為其形容詞。例如：the left-wing faction of the party該黨的左翼派系)
ex. A factious group was trying to undermine the government.

fastidious 挑剔的
ex. He is very fastidious about how a suitcase should be packed.

fastidious的字源是拉丁文的fastidiosus原意是”厭惡、輕視”，後來才衍伸出由於對其他人厭惡輕視，產生出挑剔的意思。大家可以把fastidious中間的tid畫起來，其實它的原意就是tedious 厭煩的，我們可以說This course is tedious, but students usually get easy grades. (這門課令人厭煩，但是給學生的分數很甜。)。亦即，我們可把tidious看成tedious，再配合字源，比較容易記得因為厭煩而產生的挑剔感。

再來說felicitous(和其他幾個長得最不像)。

felicitous： 幸福的，適當的

1.this word is derived from FELIX-(root word means "happy, fortunate, fruitful, fertile")
ex. I have a felicitous family.(幸福的) = I have a roseate family.(薔薇色的,玫瑰色的;幸福的;樂觀的)

ex. a felicitous speaker
ex. The timing of the 1000th milestone is particularly felicitous, it being the institute's 40th anniversary year.

2.Can be confused:  
fortuitous(偶然的=adventitious)
ex.The growth of imperialism in europe is not fortuitous.
(fortuitous另一義為「幸運的」，ex. a fortuitous adventure奇遇)。

fictitious 和 factitious

fictitious(出自fiction：小說，虛構)、 factitious只差一個字母，來自不同的字源：
fic(t) , fig = 構型 (= form , shape)，如fiction科幻小說
fac(t) =make, do 如，factory工廠

fictitious=fict(form)-i(便於發音，連接用)-tious (多的)->(心靈)構形(form)出很多的事物->虛構的=imaginary
(image對應到fict-的字義，form形狀)
ex. fictitious names (虛構的名字)


factitious=fact(make)-i(便於發音，連接用)-tious (多的)->(人)做很多的動作或事物(用意是欺騙)，
produced by humans rather than by natural forces )->做作的、虛假的

3. Factitious disorder (精神科專有名詞)：人為疾患
是故意的，例如明明沒有糖尿病卻故意吃降血糖藥物(透過人為的行動、努力)，
目的就是『成為病人』，希望藉著裝病，得到關心或照顧。

Factitious disorder may learn to produce the 'correct ' response in all of these examination procedures.

4.Presumably the statue is of factitious marble, because for that price you're not going to get the real stuff.

兩個都是裝病，有什麼不同呢？

目的不同！

《Malingering 詐病》：
是故意的，例如故意假裝腳不能動，但以為沒人看見時腳就能動了。
，有『成為病人』以外的目的，例如保險費、逃避兵役...
(Factitious disorder的目的是『成為病人』，獲得關心)

DEATH PENALTY DEBATE

The death penalty is so last millennium!

Most countries around the world have already abolished the death penalty; most others use it rarely if ever; and a clear majority have supported a UN Resolution against the death penalty in each of the last three years (in 2010 the majority was 109 vs 41). However, a few countries - including China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and some states in the USA (most notably Texas) - still regularly put people to death.

Most supporters of the death penalty believe that it is justified on one or more of the following grounds: (i) as a means of retribution (ie they deserve it); (ii) as a deterrent to others; (iii) to prevent any danger of re-offending; (iv) because it's cheaper than keeping people in prison.

很難想像toad會和諂媚、奉承扯上關係，不過它卻真的發生了。
先看英文的(M-W online)：
"servile parasite," 1826, apparently shortened from toad-eater "fawning flatterer" (1742), originally referring to the assistant of a charlatan, who ate a toad (believed to be poisonous) to enable his master to display his skill in expelling the poison (1629). The verb is recorded from 1827.
