Radio stations with radio data system (RDS) technology broadcast special program information that only radios with an RDS feature can receive. Between 1994 and 1996, the number of RDS radio stations in Verdland increased from 250 to 600. However, since the number of RDS-equipped radios in Verdland was about the same in 1996 as in 1994, the number of Verdlanders receiving the special program information probably did not increase significantly.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

"前提",就是使命題成立的條件. i.e. 有這個條件,則命題成立;沒這個條件,則命題不成立. GMAT 的前提,是充分條件.

很少居民住在 RDS 電台播放不到的區域
否定 (A): 很多居民住在 RDS 電台播放不到的區域,當 RDS 電台增加時,可以收到訊號的居民數會明顯增加(因為 RDS 電台增加,廣播範圍變大),於是否定了命題.
所以選 (A).

讀懂 (A) 的關鍵在於斷句(因為主要子句沒有動詞), few 指人(應該是通則,就像 many 一樣),並且知道 broadcast 的過去式就是 broadcast.

不好意思!發現 (A) 原來是這麼讀:
Few {if any of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994} broadcast to people {with RDS-equipped radios} living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.
few = RDS radio stations
很少 RDS 電台播放到之前收不到的區域
i.e. "播放區域一樣",雖然電台數目增加,因為有收音機的人沒有增加,收到的人數還是一樣多.

看了諸位大大的討論之後,對於此題的想法做一些整理:

原題結論說,因為有RDS功能的收音機數量沒變=>收聽RDS節目的人也沒有太大變動
這個推論乍看之下非常合理,但是其實暗藏陷阱!!
Ex:擁有3G功能手機人數=使用3G的人數?? 至少我就不用 :p
因此在RDS功能收音機數目與收聽RDS人數之間,存在一個非常模糊的因果關係
需要有一個假設前提來排除這個模糊地帶.
Ex:擁有RDS功能收音機的人都會收聽RDS節目, or擁有RDS功能收音機的人有固定比例的人都會收聽RDS節目,
這樣才能推論說有RDS功能的收音機數目跟收聽RDS節目的人數是有高度相關性

選項A說很少新的RDS電台播放到之前收不到的區域=>代表雖然新增了許多RDS電台,但播放區域範圍還是一樣
=>原本收聽的到的人會繼續收聽,聽不到的人仍然聽不到=>使用RDS功能的人比例因此就限定住了
此假設前提正好消除了原本推論的模糊因果關係

若是選項A假設前提不成立,則表示新增加的電台讓原本聽不到RDS節目的人也可以收聽RDS節目,
那RDS功能收音機數量不變下,收聽的人數反而增多了=>反而否定了原文的推論

乎...不過選項A還真是饒口

我覺得是這樣讀
Few (if any) of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994 broadcast to people with RDS-equipped radios living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.

把 if any 拿掉，主詞是 Few of the RDS, 而動詞是 broadcast
這樣答案就是 A 啦

(A)Few (if any) of the RDS radio stations…broadcast to people (living in areas not previously reached by RDS---> 用來形容人).
If any是指"如果有的話". 整句為""很少RDS電台, 如果有的話, 會播放節目給那些住在之前收聽不到訊號的地方的人們.""
所以等於是說播送的範圍是限定的. 而在這範圍內的RDS裝備沒有增加. ---> 導致雖然電台增加, 但因為範圍不變, 接收端的數量也不變, 所以收聽人數不變.
