not...but...有不平衡嗎?
這題我也覺得有點拗口，但是其他選項都有明顯錯誤，
不知道你選哪個?

pp1-74.
這題我也上當了，
選項C...many biological traits are not because they enhance reproduction or survival, but
選項D...many biological traits are not because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are...
一般來講beV not...but beV...的句型， but後面那個BeV會省略變成beV not...but...
所以我也選了選項C，但是這題選項C會造成語意歧異，
因為but除了在not...but...中，表示"不是...而是..."
也可以作為介係詞作"除了"的意思，雖然後者句意我怎麼想都覺得不通，
不過SC就是以語意清楚、簡潔為原則，所以選項D是比較好的答案，沒有語意歧異的問題。

pp1-76.
continuous是形容詞，consist是動詞，
選項A...,a team of scientists found the noise was not continuous but consisted of...
not Adj but V 不平衡。

選項B正確...,a team of scientists found that the noise was not continuous but consisted of...
第一，
如found, shown, report等等動詞，後面緊接一連串理由、事實、發現等複雜片語或子句，
都會緊接that...表達一個完整的概念，例如：
...environmentalists in Chicago report that...
...the 1991 report that...
...immigrants found that...
以上是我從pp題目裡面一些正確句子裡面擷取出來的，
基本上八九不離十，我看TIME, Newsweek等也都是這樣，
算是英文寫作的一種pattern吧。
第二，
選項B...was not continuous but consisted of...
未簡化前應該是這樣...was not continuous but (was) consisted of...
記得我前面說的beV not...but (beV)...句形，
這樣也解釋了為什麼未畫線的consisted是被動型態，非常吻合！

pp2-199
not A, but B的句型，
A和B必須平衡，所以只有選項C正確。
以選項B為例：
(B)...not caused by stress, alcohol, or rich foods, but are by...
粗體字部分不平衡，V by N... =/= BeV by N...
把後面的are替換為caused就平衡了：
...not caused by stress, alcohol, or rich foods, but caused by...
為求簡潔，後面的caused去掉變成選項C。

剛好這幾天把PP做完也正在檢討，
