為了二戰準備
一個半月後重做到這一題 (已無記憶)
直接憑感覺作答 我還是選到D !? (連錯2次 MoBeBe說要罰寫50遍)

不過 看了 SELVICHY大 & MODERN 大 的分析

下次考試時若看到 the number is ....than ....the amount
就先排除

Therefor, I go for C this time

PS.樓上p大所謂 "that amount比the amount指代清楚 " 這是慣例嗎? 疑惑ing *-)

可是我從沒看過,fewer than that amount的,
amount不是都應該是不可數,怎可以用fewer than,
og243那題他是說很多個amount,所以變成the amounts of...,
amount 是用來帶不可數的,暨是不可數哪能用fewer形容,
我是覺得d不是很好,但我認為c的錯誤更大,
天阿到底哪個對?天阿.................

根據兩個月前的莫北北說法(老師的說法總是一再改變)
答案是C 但是喔
最後的amount要改成 figure所以說 又是題目錯了? +o(

雖然我就是選一般認為錯誤的D,但現在看下來,C與D我比較支持C......
我是以drive-ins為可數角度出發的
選項D怎麼看,the number與the amount比實在很怪啊:~~~

看完這題的討論
卻被 number / figure / amount 該用什麼修飾搞的一團亂
想要請教一下
像是
bigger
smaller
less
fewer
more
這些字分別修飾
number
figure
amount
的誰呢?
還是要根據前面的名詞單複數決定呢?
根據我的記憶
amount修飾是不可數名詞,所以要用less/more than the amount...,
number 和 figure是指數字的大小,
所以要用bigger/smaller than the number / figure of....
這樣對嗎?
那fewer呢? 是不是也可以修飾amount?
像是這題就是用fewer修飾amount耶
可不可以幫我開示一下,

amount雖然有時可跟可數名詞連用(ex. We didn't expect such a large amounts of people: Longman),但這種用法是將名詞視為一體, 我覺得這題4,000已是很具體的數目(有很明顯的數數動作),後面用amount指代4,000並不正確。ETS指可數之數時用number, 不可數之量時用amount;我認為不能為這題破例

CD大牛mindfree說fewer than不能跟as many as混用,但是B用的是as many 不是as many as;我認為不能混用的情況應該是 There are fewer than as many as 4000 drive-ins

"more/fewer than N times as many"的用法實例很多,如下:
Rapid industrialisation saw construction and manufacturing take root, though these days more than twice as many paulistanos work in services as in these sectors.

Cambridge上說as many可作代名詞

因為as many可以當代詞所以B還原應該是 there are fewer than one-quarter of 4,000 drive-ins
我覺得像C這樣there are 後面只有數量的並不好
打個比方there are twice as many就比there are twice the number好吧

我覺得這題其實也沒大家想的那麼複雜,

這裡套用大衛閱讀法,
中間逗號僅是次要結構的補述前面when那句的1950年的事情,若省略不看也不影響句意,

而原題句意是:在比較過去和今日的drive-ins(這個我將它理解為免下車的速食店)的多寡
也就是說整句是在講過去這種免下車的速食店相當多,但今日卻變少了→句意上明顯是在講drive-ins數量上的變化,

既然如此看到選項中有less就可快速刪掉了,因為less不是little的比較級,它只可用在不可數名詞的情況

所以只剩下B\C可以進入決選了
而B選後面的as many,一看到也刪了,因為句子中已經有fewer than了,那再用as many感覺上好像redundant!
B選中的as many 與fewer than一塊放在句子中在OG中是錯誤選項的常勝軍…
以下這題是OG89跟這題有點類似,也是there開頭
(ps.誰說there開頭就必錯啊!這題there開頭也對,所以句意為上!!!)

89. A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.
(A) there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(B) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were (microcomputers for pupils)
(D) every thirty-two pupils now have one micro­computer, four times as many than there were

Choices A, B, and C appropriately use the construction "one X for every thirty-two Y's" to describe the ratio of computers to pupils, but only C, the best answer, is error-free. In A, are does not agree with the subject, one microcomputer; furthermore, in A, B, and D, than is used where as is required. Choices D and E reorder and garble the "one X ..." construction, making four times as many refer illogically to pupils.
所以ANS-C選就脫穎而出...

至於大家一直在爭執的D選,我覺得錯在
1.Less than的用法就錯了
2.兩個逗號中間的句子也僅表示在同位語補述過去1950年的事情,
而句子的主詞明顯是drive-ins,V怎麼會是單數!
3.若說D的the number是指4000人,我覺得是不是將句子誰是真正的主詞搞混了
句意上不是在比較過去和今日的drive-ins(這個我將它理解為免下車的速食店)的多寡,
後面but+S+V的S怎麼會變成在指這個位居次要結構的補述4000人!

我第一次做這題選 (B) , 後來傾向 (C) . 看了 keane0727 的見解,覺得應該重新思考一下.

amount 幾乎都和不可數名詞連用

2: the whole effect, significance, or import
3: a principal sum and the interest on it
usage Number is regularly used with count nouns <a large number of mistakes> <any number of times> while amount is mainly used with mass nouns <annual amount of rainfall> <a substantial amount of money>. The use of amount with count nouns has been frequently criticized; it usually occurs when the number of things is thought of as a mass or collection <glad to furnish any amount of black pebbles — New Yorker> <a substantial amount of film offers — Lily Tomlin> or when money is involved <a substantial amount of loans — E. R. Black>.

4000 drive-ins 用 amount 似乎不太恰當. 四千家得來速是散佈在美國各地,是一家一家建立的,不是一開始就四千家,總不能說是一堆得來速?

twice/one-quarter as much (much = 不可數名詞),那可數名詞的代名詞就是 many 囉!

= His younger brother earns half as much (as $4000).
= His younger brother earns half as much ; (much = $4000)

(B) = there are fewer than one-quarter as many (as there were)
= there are fewer than one-quarter as many (as 4000 drive-ins)
= there are fewer than one-quarter as many ; (many = 4000 drive-ins)

這題前幾天莫老剛好有講解到,答案為A

1.amount與不可數名詞連用,主詞為複數(drive-ins) 消去CDE
2.one-quarter應為單數比較 消去BC (fewer than..)
(度量衡擔任主詞,動詞單數 ex:Ten dollars is too much for a pencil.)

聽來有理喔!
試著整理一下:
(A) 分數比較用 less/more (e.g. OG10-Q101); one-quarter that many (one-quarter 用法同 double: pre-det.)
(B) 因為 fewer 用於可數名詞, one-quarter 作代名詞囉! one-quarter = 1/4*[some 4000 (drive-ins)]; as many 就多餘了
(C) amount 指不可數名詞 (number 指可數名詞)
(D) number, amount 比較不同類
(E) it 指代不清; 4000 = 4000 drive-ins (drive-ins =/= it)

強記這種可數不可數的關係對中文當母語的人真痛苦

我剛剛搜尋一下AT數學題,看來less than的用法還蠻廣泛的,數字比率都可以
fewer than 還真的是用在"實體可以一個個數的出來"的名詞上

貼給大家參考
