the number指drive-in數量,
that amount指4000
2. 句尾若還原, 我猜想選項的意思是: there are fewer than one- quarter of that amount (of drive-ins); 因此處amount若指4,000的話, 用number or figure較佳. [Longman dictionary: Amount -- a quanity or sum; amount is used with uncountable nouns. With plurals it is better to use number.]
(today the number...
另外 that amount of drive-ins 部分,
the amounts of suspected carcinogens fed to animals
today the number (of drive-ins) is less than one-quarter of that amount.
When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950's,
(there are) some 4,000 (drive-ins) existed in the United States, but today[rainbow] there are [/rainbow]fewer (drive-ins) than one-quarter of
that amount (哪個?
"the number (drive-ins? ) 比 1/4的the amount (drive-ins?
