2. As the housing affordability gap widens, middle-income families are especially hard-hit, and these families can no longer qualify to buy homes, and rising rental rates force them to use far more than the standard 25 percent of their incomes for housing, leaving them with no equity or tax write-offs to offset the expenditures.

(A) and these families can no longer qualify to buy homes, and
(B) since these families can no longer afford to buy homes, furthermore
(C) for these families can no longer afford to buy homes, yet
(D) and these families can no longer afford to buy homes; however,
(E) and these families can no longer afford to buy homes, for

the answer is c.
But I choose A.
can anyone come to my rescue?
thanks

我是第一個刪A,理由是afford to buy is better than qualify to buy
但坦白說,我也選不出c
請大家繼續討論

It's clear we can get rid off all the answers starting with "and, because those families can no longer afford to buy homes is the result of "housing affordability gap widens".
In C use "for" to indicated the reason why "the middle-income families are especially hard-hit", and "yet" provides a link that depite all these bad lucks, something worse is still coming - "rising rental rates force them to use far more than the standard 25 percent of their incomes for housing".
In B "furthermore" is not as good as "yet" because it describes a list of events.
For example,
Mr, Wang just get fired and yet his girl friend still wants to break up with him.
If you use furthermore, the sentence lacks the feeling of "drama".
